Lost Mermaid

Tol went for a paddle
In the deep blue sea
Saw a crab walking
Whilst drinking his pee
Watched mussels on lobsters
Filing their nails
Wrapped up in seaweed
Pretending they had tails
Dolphins teaching philosophy
The wonder of sea views
Monkfish dancing sedately
Against sand that’s on the move
When in between his toes
He caught a little shrimp
Who’d had a wicked night
That had left him with a limp
Tol stood around for ages
Waiting for the tide
When up jumped old Neptune
And took him by surprise
Looking for a mermaid
Who thought the world was green
Had left her Conchie home
To find a better scene
Neptune looked through craggy water
In ponds with birds eye view
Through sea life’s doggy tendrils
Round rocks of brilliant hue
Tears of pearls rolled quietly
Across his shaggy chin
For he loved her deeply
Now his life looked grim
Tol spied a tail a flashing
In nature’s dark black beard
A mermaid curled up neatly
Where she had disappeared
Neptune roared such a bellow
That went crashing to the shore
Delighted by the sighting
Pearls fell on natures poor
Mermaid woke with such a shudder
Brought a seahorse on the wing
Shells formed a ribbed back chariot
The fish choir sang a hymn
Down in the briny depth
Cutting through the sea
Neptune and his sweetheart
For love had set them free
Tol dragged his feet back slowly
A drifter along the shore
Tale of the unexpected
But who could ask for more
